Vi er godt inde i sommeren og det betyder at de forskellige windsurfproducenter er færdige med at teste næste års udstyr og nu er klar til at præsentere hvad de syntes vi skal sejle på og med næste år.

Det gælder også for Simmer Style der netop har præsenteret os for deres 2011 modeller og har lavet en række præsentationsvideo.

Fuerteventura Grand Slam

Fuerteventura er i gang på tredje dag, og det er kendte ansigter i front – der var på forhånd lagt op til en kamp mellem Antoine Albeau og Bjørn Dunkerbeck, men andre sejlere har blandet sig i toppen og gjort det svært. Cyril Mousillmani har været meget godt sejlende, og ligeledes Finian Maynard som har været meget stabil. Dog har der været dominans fra Antoine Albeau, der allerede nu har adskillige førstepladser. Day 3 – The third day of fast and furious racing off Sotavento’s white sands belonged to Dunkerbeck, but the week is still Albeau’s.

The spectators finally got to witness the battle of the titans today with the awesome rise of the Terminator, Bjorn Dunkerbeck (Starboard, Severne, Mystic) battling it out in both winner’s finals with the 2009 world champion, Antoine Albeau (JP, NeilPryde).

The scene was set for the ultimate showdown with a perfect 15-20 knot breeze, clear blue skies, and a backdrop of beachgoers watching on in anticipation. With two full races scheduled for the day, both of the legends had two chances to prove their worth, and win over the crowds.

D Day

With a less than perfect start to the week, it was only a matter of time before Dunkerbeck sought salvation. The Terminator sailed his 8.6 Severne Reflex, and Starboard iSonic 111 almost faultlessly during every early round heat, to pass through to the finals with ease.

Despite Albeau dominating race seven, Dunkerbeck gritted his teeth following a less than ideal start, to charge his way through the fleet like a lightning bolt, gaining places down every run and through all of his gybes. When he got to the final straight to see Albeau and Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, Gaastra, Dakine) gunning for the line, Dunkerbeck was forced to go all out down the final furlong where he hit warp speed. Had the course been any longer, the many times world champion would have claimed second place, but Pritchard just managed to defend himself leaving Dunkerbeck to settle for third.

The final of race eight was a completely different story though. Back on form, and knowing that he had the speed to annihilate any one who dare get in his way, Dunkerbeck hit mach 10 and crossed the line bang on the gun. By the first mark he was ahead of the pack, and with Albeau trailing in his wake, need never look back. If he had looked back however, it may have brought a smile to his face as the event leader, Albeau had dropped his sail forcing himself to the back of the fleet.

Tight At The Top

Although the day belonged to Dunkerbeck, there were also many other sailors that put in some rock solid results to consolidate their positions at the front of the fleet. The first of these was Finian Maynard (RRD, Gaastra) who’s now lying in 2^nd overall after a 4^th and 3^rd saw him creep past day one leader, Cyril Moussilmani (Starboard, North).

Unfortunately, Moussilmani’s slip-ups today have helped his rivals catch up. The Frenchman was on fantastic form during race seven where he scored a sixth. However, a broken fin box forced him to use his smallest board in race eight, which meant he failed to hold his position, and went out in the quarterfinals. Moussilmani remains in 3^rd overall, but could do with finding his day one form.

Former overall world champion, Kevin Pritchard also posted some of his best results of the contest, with his awesome 2^nd place in race seven after holding off the Terminator, Dunkerbeck being his best score of the season. And, with his usual consistent style, scored a 5^th in race eight which places him in 5^th overall.

Britain’s Ross Williams (Tabou, Gaastra) was another sailor to play the consistency game today, with a 5^th and a 6^th seeing him comfortably sitting in 6^th overall.

Stepping Up Their Game

It wasn’t just the sailors at the front of the fleet who were upping their game today, many of the mid fleet sailors showed plenty of promise.

The first of these was the French all rounder, Julien Quentel (JP, NeilPryde) who sailed outstandingly to qualify for the winner’s final in race seven. This wasn’t his first taste of battling with the best though, he actually qualified for the same heat in race six, which definitely makes him one to watch for the future.

Italian, Alberto Menegatti (Starboard, Simmer) also had his best day of the week. Not only did he qualify for the loser’s final in race seven, but he did one better in race eight to wrestle with the winners. Wrestling being the word, as he was in a solid third after the first two legs, but then Albeau made his mistake closing the inside lane, which cost Menegatti his race.

Top PWA wave performer, Robby Swift (JP, NeilPryde) also sailed his slalom kit to a higher degree today. He found his form to fly off the line and comfortably go through heat after heat. Eventually he raced in both loser’s finals, but narrowly missed out on making the winner’s. Still, a better day for the young Brit sees him climb the up the ladder.

Another sailor who deserves a mention, despite not doing quite so well today, is the young Frenchman, Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic, North). Throughout the past three days he’s shown signs of excellence, especially yesterday when he qualified for the winner’s finals on two occasions, and even scored a 3^rd ahead of seasoned pros like Dunkerbeck. At just twenty years old, he has been tipped for the top, and will surely be a top ranked racer before long.

Looking Ahead

The forecast for tomorrow looks similar to today’s so we expect racing to continue for the remainder of the event. With Dunkerbeck back on form, and Albeau making mistakes, there’s every possibility that the results will change.

Danskere til Tysk Mesterskab

Så er der ikke lang tid til at det går løs på den tyske ø Sylt (Sild) Efter en masse timers forberedelse med både pakning af udstyr og træning på vand og land, er danske sejlere fra både Fyn og Jylland klar til at drage til den tyske ø Sylt, for at deltage i både Formula, Slalom, Freestyle og Wave. Stævnet har i sig selv tradition for at være et rigtig stort stævne.. flere end 100.000 mennesker besøger øen, når der er lagt op til en ordentlig omgang surf.. Stedet har også ry for, at være et sted hvor der er stor risiko for at få ødelagt sit udstyr, når det virkelige blæser, da Sylt er et af de steder, hvor de har en rigtig ond shore break.

Mange af de tyske stjerner har også meldt deres ankomst, som f.eks Bernd Flesner og Klaas Voget. Fra Danmark kommer kendte navne som, Rasmus Øgelund, Nicolai Karup i wave/ freestyle og i slalom stiller Sebastian Kornum, Mikael Harboe, Danni Jakobsen og Christian Justesen…

Kenneth Danielsen på Gran Canaria 2010

For godt en uge siden sluttede det første PWA world cup wave stævne i år her på Gran Canaria. Spottet, hvor stævnet afholdes, hedder Pozo, og det er kendt for at være den mest vindblæste strand i verden. Strand kan man nærmest ikke kalde det, for der er stort set ikke et sandkorn, da de er blæst væk her ligger bare en masse solbrændte sten tilbage.

Stævnet varede kun 4 dage i år, og der var kun wave på programmet. Men helt usædvanligt var første stævne dag uden vind, så dagen gik med at rigge til og sætte stævnestickers i sejlene.

På anden dagen var den vanlige vind vendt tilbage, der var dog ikke så meget af den, som der plejer at være, og bølger var der heller ikke meget af. Men med kun 3 dage tilbage af stævnet, havde arrangørerne lidt tidspres, hvis der skulle en dobbelteliminering i hus, så overdommeren Duncan valgte at starte de første heat i de lidt tvivlsomme forhold. Heat længden var 18 min., hvilket er usædvanligt langt her i Pozo. Det er vidst første gang, at der har været så lange heats her. Jeg havde Antxon Otaegui, som er en af verdens bedste freestylesejlere, i mit første heat. Jeg vidste, at han er rigtig dygtig til at springe, men at jeg havde en god chance for at slå ham i waveriding; så min taktik var at prøve at få nogle spring så hurtigt som muligt, og så bruge resten af heatet på at banke en ordentlig wavescore sammen. Jeg fik heldigvis en god bølge i slutningen af heatet, hvor jeg fik nogle gode sving og en taka til at slutte det af med, så jeg vandt heatet og gik videre.

Næste heat var så mod Ricardo Campello, som sidste år blev nr. 3 hernede både sidste år og i år. Heatet nåede vi ikke at sejle samme dag, da det tog en del tid at komme igennem den indledende runde pga. de lange heats.
Næste morgen på 3. dagen skulle jeg så sejle mit heat mod Ricardo. Vinden var nu en del stærkere, og det var lidt mere Pozo-forhold, som vi kender dem, så heatlængden var nu tilbage til de normale 10 min. Jeg vidste, at Ricardo er en stor mundfuld, men hvis jeg sejlede sikkert og tog det med ro, havde jeg en chance. Vi startede begge to lidt upwind på banen, og da det grønne flag kom op, sejlede vi begge to med fuld fart ud af. Ricardo var dog lige 3 meter foran mig, og da vi kommer halvvejs ud i bugten, rejser dagens største bølge sig op lige foran os. Ricardo er desværre forrest, og han rammer bølgen lige inden den bryder og bliver skudt ca. 8 meter op i en monster stalled forward. Jeg sætter af på den samme bølge og skyder også en stalled forward, som jeg lander helt perfekt, men bølgen er brudt, da jeg rammer den, så jeg kommer ikke helt så højt op som Ricardo. Vi sejler begge videre, og lige inden vi vender, rammer Ricardo endnu en bølge og booster et mega backloop. Bølgen er helt flad, da jeg rammer den så intet hop til mig. F… tænker jeg. Så er jeg da i hvert fald bagud på spring, og jeg begyndte at stresse lidt, hvilket jeg normalt ellers aldrig gør. Det resulterede i nogle små fejl fra min side, men jeg fik kæmpet mig tilbage og fik de sidste spring og et par gode bølger. Ricardo tog desværre sejren, men kun med 3 og 4 points forspring. Vi havde samme wavescore, men de to første spring han lavede, gav ham sejeren

Singlen blev sejlet færdig, og Victor Fernandez tog snævert sejren foran Phillip Köster.

Der var stadig ikke meget tid at gøre med, så dobbeltelimineringen blev skudt i gang med det samme. Jeg havde nu min kammerat Andreas Olandersson, som jeg faktisk boede sammen med hernede, i mit første heat. Jeg sejlede et rigtig godt heat og gik videre til næste, hvor Australske Jager Stone ventede. Jeg havde endnu en gang et rigtig godt heat, men det havde Stone også, så det var en meget snæver sejr, men heldigvis til min fordel.

Næste heat var mod Pozo-local Jonas Ceballos. Det skulle jeg dog først sejle dagen efter om morgenen, hvor der var skippermøde kl. 8.00 og første start kl. 8.30; så stadig halvsovende, var jeg på vandet for at varme op kl. 8.00. Kl. 8.42 startede vores heat. Vi startede på samme måde som mit heat mod Ricardo. Jeg lå dog forrest denne gang, men lige inden det grønne flag kom op, droppede vinden lidt, og Jonas fik lige præcis sneget sig foran mig; og så var det samme historie en gang til. Han fik to spring på første tur ud. Tabletop forward og tweaked pushloop, med mig lige i røven på ham til at se det hele. Denne gang fik jeg bare ikke et eneste spring … Men tilgengæld holdt jeg hovedet koldt denne gang og fik sat et rigtig godt heat sammen. Jonas tog dog en meget snæver sejr med kun 1 og 3 points forspring. Denne gang var det wavescoren jeg tabte på. På springene havde jeg faktisk en bedre score ved to af dommerne, så jeg endte på en samlet 17 plads, hvilket jeg er godt tilfreds med. Niveauet er ekstremt højt, så det er super fedt at vinde et par heats her i Pozo.

I finalen var det igen Victor og Phillip der skulle sejle om den endelige sejr. Første heat vandt Phillip, men da Victor vandt singlen, skulle de sejle endnu engang, hvilket var ret fedt, for så var der mere action til alle os på stranden/stenene. De sejlede begge vildt imponerende, og det er utroligt at en knægt på 16 år kan være så dygtig. Victor løb dog med sejren anden gang, hvilket også var helt fortjent.

På onsdag har jeg været her i 3 uger og så vender jeg snuden hjem mod DK igen, hvor jeg skal hjem og træne til næste world cup i Klitmøller. Jeg var dog så uheldig forleden, at sejle sammen med Jens Munk, som jeg også bor sammen med hernede. Han havde ikke set mig, før jeg lige hang i en shaka foran ham. Så det resulterede i et godt forslået knæ og 7 sting i foden til mig. Jens kunne indkassere en flænge i sit board med tilhørende hår og hud fra mit skinneben. Av Av. Så har lige fået et par ufrivillige dage af vandet, men med gaffa og lidt smertestillende piller, har jeg været på vandet igen

Skyd film med en helikopter

Jeg er faldet over en ret interessant ting, som måske gør det muligt for almindelige mennesker og enthusiaster at filme fra en helikopter – mere end den ene gang, man har råd til at leje en!

Et amerikansk firma har specialiseret sig i at bygge monteringskit til fjernstyret helikoptere, og hvis du er interesseret – kan du købe en komplet pakke! Dette giver videoerne et fantastisk flot perspektiv og vinkel, men – “crash is not an option”. Kameraet, som er et spejlreflekskamera, er nemlig ikke beskyttet, så en tur i vand eller en hård landing vil næppe gavne!

Nyt finnebox system

Et nyt finnesystem har netop set dagens lys i form af Slot Box. Systemet er både nemmere at arbejde med, og så er det samtidig en del lettere! Den nye slotbox vejer under 80 gr, mens det nuværende system vejer ca. 300 gr. Det lyder måske ikke af meget i vægtbesparelse, men med moderne boards der har 2-3-4, ja helt op til 5 finneboxe, er det pludselig en vægtbesparelse på næsten ét kg!

With already four brands adopting the Slot Box for their next generation wave boards and wave fins (Starboard, Tabou, Drake and MFC and with more brands to follow), the new Slot Box promises to become a new windsurfing standard and potentially replace the US box altogether.

The great thing about the Slot box is the weight saving. A classic US box weighs a bulky 300g with its dense, plastic fibre-nylon molding and a composite PVC/PU foam/Glass fibre box wrapped around it. The Slot Box weighs just 77 grams. When you look at modern wave boards with two, three, four or even five finboxes, these weight savings add up to something pretty interesting.

The other advantage of the Slot Box is its dimensions: it uses the same dimensions as US boxes which means that current US base fins fit inside once the pin has been removed.

Slot Boxes use two specially designed side screws to lock the fin in place. These screws hold the fin in and also apply sideways pressure. This ensures that there’s always zero wobble in the fin once fitted. For convenience, the screws’ head are designed to fit with the same screwdriver as the one used for footstraps and air-valve fitting.

The Slot Boxes are currently available in two sizes: Slot Box 10 and Slot Box 13. Fit a Slot Box 10 fin inside a Slot Box 13 box and you have 3cm of adjustment room. Slot Box plugs are also available. These are used to close-off any unused boxes.

At 77g per box, the Slot Box opens up new opportunities when it comes to multi-fin board designs. And before long, maybe we’ll see even single fin boards switch from the humble US Box to the new Slot Box. Definitely a space to watch.

Roxy GGWS

Hej Alle friske Surf piger!

Med god støtte fra Roxy, Windsurfshop.dk, Hotsailsmaui.dk og Nutramino m.fl. er det med stor gælde at vi nu kan invitere jer alle til dette års ”Roxy GGWS” event.

D. 27.-29. August afholdes der ”Roxy Girls Go Windsurf” vol. 3 på Sjælland.
Med eventet vil vi gerne hjælpe alle piger i Danmark med at skabe og udbygge et godt netværk og et godt sammenhold blandt alle jer ”WaterGirls”.
Der er mange danske windsurfpiger/Surfpiger med hang til vind og saltvand i håret og vi vil derfor gerne samle så mange af Jer piger fra hele Danmark (og sydsverige), som overhovedet muligt!

Tiltaget, som startede i 2008 med en enkelt lørdag i Jyllinge, Volume 2 blev afviklet sidste år i Åkrogen, ved Århus som et weekend event. Igen i år fastholder vi weekend konceptet. (fredag eftermiddag til søndag eftermiddag), så vi har nok tid til masser af windsurf og hygge

Det koster 300 kr. at deltage hele weekenden, og overnatningen sker i Jyllinge Sejlklubs lokaler på Strandpromenaden 2, 4040 Jyllinge.

Vi håber at vi bliver rigtig mange, så de sidste kommer til at sove i medbragt telt på græsset lige op til klubhuset hvor der er toilet, bad og fællesrum.

For pengene sørger vi for mad og drikke under hele eventet, mulighed for undervisning i alt lige fra strandstart til duckjiibes, vulcans og spocks og så selvfølgelig også mulighed for en lækker ROXY event t-shirt til de hurtigste. Gennem weekenden vil der også være små konkurrencer og andet sjov på vandet, hvor der selvfølgelig vil være masser af fine præmier.

Der vil blandt andet bliver tilbudt SUP tur sejlads rundt om de små øer i Roskilde fjord.

Der vil blive delt ud af rejse erfaringer og spot beskrivelser samt givet Trim tips til alt fra fodstropper, sejl, mastefodsposition, bomhøjde og finnestørrelser.

Kendte ansigter i front

Pozo leverede i går forhold der gjorde det muligt at gennemføre første runde, som blev vundet af Victor Fernandez, som besejrede Phillip Köster. De to forhåndsfavoritter gik da også i finalen, hvor de fik lov at kæmpe. Denne gang til Victors fordel, som nu fører Pozo stævnet. Flere af de lokale sejlere har gjort det rigtigt godt i Pozo, ved at tage flere af kanonerne ud. En af overraskelserne var Kauli Seadi der røg tidligt ud, da Ben Proffit slog ham ud. Læs nedenstående tekst, der b. la beskriver Kaulis dårlige start.

Danske Kenneth Danielsen sejlede også nogle fine runder, og tog flere sejlere ud. Mødet med Ricardo Campello var dog lidt for stor en mundfuld. Ricardo fyrede nogle af hans velkendte hop af, høje og meget flotte.

A return of the relentless winds in Pozo allowed for a full day of sensational world tour competition with a single elimination completed for both the men’s and women’s fleets, and the first two rounds of the double down for the men. Competitors were maxed on 4.5s early in the morning enabling the competition to start on schedule at 09:30, and run right through to the early evening.

Men

King Of Pozo

Three times Pozo champion, Victor Fernandez (Fanatic, North, MFC) stole the show from local lad, and 2009 Pozo champion, Philip Köster (Starboard, NeilPryde, Dakine) in an epic showdown of world-class talent.

Fernandez flew through his early round heats taking the scalp of many past world champions, including the former overall world champion, Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, Gaastra, Dakine) in the third round. Top contender from Tenerife, Dany Bruch (Patrik, Severne) who put up an excellent fight, and was on fire busting out his trademark one handed back loops with copious amounts of style, but couldn’t quite match Fernandez’s double forwards. He then beat fellow team mate, and former freestyle world champion, Marcilio Browne (Fanatic, North), who’s riding was no match for Fernandez, before going on to meet Köster in the final.

Köster’s jumping wowed the crowds throughout the day, with whoops and cheers coming from every angle when he launched into orbit. His stalled doubles were some of the most impressive jumps ever seen in world cup competition, making him without doubt the standout jumper of the day. However, in the final he failed to match the insane jumps that had pulled him through his heats earlier in the day, and Fernandez was almost on a par with huge faultless doubles of his own. Fernandez was also milking waves for all they’re worth, flying round 360s, and adding takas with ease. Köster almost caught up, and could have claimed the final if only he’d nailed some technical turns along with his awesome double taka, allowing Fernandez to claim the crown on the narrowest of victories with a 3-2 decision.

Standouts Of The Single

Aside from Fernandez and Köster, there were plenty of other sailors that showed real promise throughout the early rounds. The first of these was Jonas Ceballos (Mistral, Simmer) who took down the young hotshot Alessio Stillrich (Fanatic, North) by sailing a calculated heat, timing the waves to perfection in order to bust out his best moves in the right conditions. Stillrich had moments of glory, but Ceballos’s experience shone through and won it for him.

Britain’s Ben Proffitt (Simmer) was the next sailor to perform to an exceptional standard. He took down Frenchman Jules Denel (Exocet) after a display of port tack prowess, to go head to head with former wave world champion, Kauli Seadi (JP, NeilPryde, MFC). Many thought that this would be the end of Proffitt’s game in Pozo, but the Brit hit it hard and destroyed the Brazilian sensation. To be fair, Seadi’s day didn’t start off in the best manner, being stopped by the police on the way to the beach. He then failed to perform to his usual high standard, and an on form Proffitt took full advantage. Following that heat, Proffitt almost took down Köster too with a 2-1 decision favouring the Pozo champ. Watch out for Proffitt in the double!

Experienced local ripper, Dario Ojeda (Tabou, Simmer, Dakine, MFC) sailed past a whole host of locals with some amazingly consistent wave scores and incredible jumps, before stepping it up a notch further in the quarter-finals to beat the 2009 Sylt Wave Champion, Alex Mussolini (Tabou, Vandal). Ojeda lost to Koster in the semi-finals, but then went on to take the scalp of the Brazilian, Browne in the loser’s final to claim a well-deserved 3^rd place.

The next sailor to turn heads on the beach was former freestyle world title holder, and triple loop dare devil, Ricardo Campello (JP, NeilPryde, MFC). Within the first 30 seconds of his heat he’d racked up two of the highest jumping scores of the day. You couldn’t start a heat in a more perfect way.

Last Chance Saloon

With plenty of wind, the single in the bag, and a promising forecast for Friday, head judge, Duncan Coombs decided to get straight on with the double elimination, which gives every sailor a chance to make up for their previous mistakes.

Those making amends included three times freestyle world champion, Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic, North) who finally found himself a wave board, and with it some riding skills to go alongside his already awesome jumps. He’s passed through the first rounds and will now meet Klaas Voget (Fanatic, Simmer, MFC) tomorrow morning.

Another freestyler to break through in the double so far is Lanzarote local, Antxon Otaegui (JP, NeilPryde) whose awesome two scoops have seen him climbing the ranks. Eleazar Alonso (Naish, Naish) also stood out, showing off his excellent riding skills as well as some impressive jumping to advance to the final 16. And, finally Seadi found some form to fight through a few heats and go on to fight another day. If he starts to bust out his trademark push loop forwards, he could go all the way to the top. Only time will tell…

Women

Queen Of Pozo

The undisputed champion of Pozo, Daida Ruano Moreno (Starboard, Severne) took women’s wave sailing to yet another level today when she hit the water. Huge one handed back loops, and seriously tweaked table top push loops helped her to steal the show from anyone who dared get in the way. The only sailor to really challenge her was twin sister, Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard, Severne) who shared the limelight of the single elimination final with her. Iballa had the ability to bust out some awesome back loops, and link together some great backside aerials with frontside smacks, but Daida’s wave selection was far superior, racking up the points early on when the biggest sets came through. If the forecast is correct for tomorrow, and the women get to sail their double, it’ll be interesting to see if Iballa can steal her twin’s crown.

Standouts Of The Single

Steffi Wahl (Gaastra) showed plenty of promise during her heats with some excellent forward loops, and great wave scores to finish 5^th equal in the single. Nayra Alonso (Fanatic, Severne) also had some of the most stylish riding of the day, with some outstanding frontside hits that were second to none to claim 4^th. And, the fearless competitor, Karin Jaggi (Patrik, Severne) closed the gap on the Moreno’s with some huge forwards, and push loops to take the final podium position.

PWA Wave Pozo – rolig start

Så er worldcuppen rykket til Pozo, Gran Canaria og er igen i år med dansk deltagelse. Danske Kenneth Danielsen er til start i det hårde felt i Pozo. Tidligere på året viste Kenneth rigtig god form, ved at besejre nogle b. la Phillip Köster og Klaas Voget, som begge har været helt fremme i Pozo. Sidste år besejrede det unge talent Phillip Köster tidligere års vinder, Victor Fernandez og sejlede sig til sin første wordcup sejr. Efter førstedagen er resultattavlen stadig blank, for lidt vind og ingen bølger holdte sejlerne “on hold” hele dagen. Vejrudsigten lover heldigvis rigtig Pozo forhold senere på ugen, så vi kan forvente noget fantastisk action på vandet.

Pozo er kendt for at være det mest blæsende stop på hele worldcuppen, og har tidlgere leveret helt vilde forhold, hvor sejl 100+ kg. sejlere, må ned på deres 3.3 og 3.7! Desvære er der kun wave for mændene og damerne i år, og ingen slalom eller freestyle som tidligere.

Day 1 – Wave sailing’s elite arrived in Pozo to battle it out in the relentless wind and waves with the local hotshots, but were left becalmed on the boulders, creating an unusually relaxed vibe for the opening day of world-class competition.

A windless trials also left all of those hoping to qualify for an entry eagerly awaiting the close of registration. In the end, there was a full fleet with just a couple of wildcard places available leaving many young guns disappointed to not make the cut.

With little wind, the most exciting part of the day culminated in the production of the elimination ladders. And, for the up and coming youngsters that had made it in to the competition, this moment was always going to be hard. Needless to say, there were no cries of joy – this is the toughest fleet in the world, and perhaps the most hardcore introduction to the PWA wave world tour. Easy draws are definitely a thing of the past in Pozo.

Local hotshot Phillip Köster

Local Effect

Last year an unknown Philip Koster (Starboard, NeilPryde, Dakine) exploded onto the scene in Pozo winning the contest with some impressive moves. He’s without doubt one of the favourites to take the crown again, but will have some tough heats along the way. Perhaps the hardest of which will be his second, when –if he qualifies – he’ll go head to head with former wave world champion, Kauli Seadi (JP, NeilPryde).

Following in Koster’s footsteps are a whole heap of locals, all looking to make their mark and gain some recognition here in Gran Canaria. But, with such a long list of local stars, who should you watch?

The youngest to gain entry to the most prestigious port tack event on tour is 14 year old Moritz Mauch (Mistral, North). Despite sailing under a German number, he is in fact a Pozo local, and has an arsenal of tricks up his sleeve. However, in his very first PWA heat he’s been put up against the port tack specialist from Britain, Phil Horrocks (JP, Gaastra), who has a wealth of competition experience, making it a pretty unlucky draw for the young contender.

Two Gran Canarian hotshots that could go far are Eleazar Alonso (Naish, Naish) and Omar Sanchez (RRD boards). Both competed last year, and have trained hard throughout the last 12 months to get in shape for this contest once again. If Alonso can take down three times freestyle world champion, Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic, North) in his first heat, then he’ll be testing his skills against the awesome port tack jumper, Klaas Voget (Fanatic, Simmer, MFC). Sanchez will have an equally tough time, with wave specialist Camille Juban (Gun, MFC) fighting him first, and if he makes it through, Sylt wave champion Alex Mussolini (Tabou, Vandal) second.

Others to look out for include Jose Romero (JP, NeilPryde) who has the skills to pass through his first heat, but will then be battling with top contender Dario Ojeda (Tabou, Simmer, Dakine). Alessio Stillrich (Fanatic, North) who has the spot dialled, but could meet Jonas Ceballos (Mistral, Simmer) in his second heat. Then there’s Francisco Casas Garcia (Starboard, Severne) who, if he beats freestyle flavour Tonky Frans (F2, Gaastra), will go on to meet the French ripper, Thomas Traversa (Tabou, Gaastra). Josep Pons Casasnovas (Severne) also knows the spot like the back of his hand, but with Yann Sorlut (RRD, Simmer) to take down first, will find it difficult to advance.

All of the locals have the potential to cause an upset, but whether they have enough experience to take home the ultimate prize at the end of the week will be a different story. However, our inside line on kid Koster last year was that he had the skills, but wouldn’t make it to the finals, and look what happened there!

Looking Ahead

With the current forecast, and Pozo’s reputation, the organisers remain hopeful that we’ll see some awesome action on the water, and the competition will get underway tomorrow morning on schedule.
